Why BOSIF

India is one of the world’s largest ecosystems of technology professionals, students, and institutions contributing to open source software.

Despite this scale, many foundational open source platforms and governance structures are headquartered outside India, limiting domestic ownership of strategic decision-making, roadmap control, and ecosystem leadership.

BOSIF exists to:

• Enable India-origin open source initiatives
• Strengthen academic and research participation in open source
• Provide neutral governance frameworks rooted in public interest
• Support indigenous innovation without isolationism or exclusivity

BOSIF does not seek to replace global collaboration. It seeks to ensure that India participates not only as a contributor, but as a steward and originator of open source initiatives.
